Chapter 1: New Pretty Town

We meet two characters in this chapter:

Tally Youngblood – as far as I can tell, the protagonist. She is anxious for her transformation into a Pretty in three months time.

Peris – Tally’s best friend who had just been turned into a Pretty.

What we learned

I am going to assume that this takes place in the future

“It [the bridge] had been built so long ago that it can hold up its own weight,”

-I have a feeling this bridge is probably from around our time, since our bridges don’t need the support the hovering thing also mentioned
-Thing like talking bridges are of norm
ie. Tally’s bedroom said, “Sweet dreams, Tally,”

The government seems pretty strict.

“The old bridge couldn’t talk – or report trespassers, more importantly.”

This makes me think that other things would be watching as well, ready to catch rule breakers and rat them out.

Also, they are so keen to separate the Uglies and the Pretties.

In this chapter

Tally sneaks over to New Pretty Town in hopes of getting to talk to her best friend, Peris. In the end she is not caught because of a pig mask she picks up from the ground.

“Tally pushed her way through the drunken dancers, out the other side of the procession, and ran down a side street toward Garbo Mansion, wearing the face of a pig.”

If she had not had the mask, she wouldn’t have been able to continue her journey without being discovered.

That’s basically the chapter.

Points of Interest

The scar on Tally’s hand seem to have some significance to her.

I’m not quite sure what I feel about the author’s writing style. From what I see in the first chapter, I can’t say I was blown away, I’ve definitely seen a lot better. Hopefully it gets better.

I’ve heard from two people that it is, and I quote,”Reeeeaallllly, good.” But from my other friend, who is an ah-mazing writer says, “They’re not that great.” Again, perhaps I’ll get swayed later on.
